The surge in production was fueled by an increase in both employment and hours worked. The industry saw a rise in the number of production and non-supervisory workers, as well as an uptick in the average weekly hours these employees put in.
While hourly wages for production employees increased in May compared to the previous month, they were slightly lower every week compared to the same period last year. However, average weekly earnings for all employees, including management and supervisory positions, reached a new record high.
