IIHS-HLDI research finds little evidence that partial automation prevents crashes

A new study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) has cast doubt on the safety benefits of partial automation systems. Despite increasing popularity, these systems have shown little evidence of preventing collisions in older BMW and Nissan models. While crash avoidance features like automatic emergency braking (AEB) have proven effective in reducing accidents, partial automation, including lane centering and adaptive cruise control, has not demonstrated additional safety advantages. This suggests that partial automation should be viewed as a convenience rather than a safety technology.

The study emphasizes the importance of driver attention and the potential for these systems to create a false sense of security. As technology continues to evolve, it is crucial to distinguish between true safety features and those that primarily enhance driving comfort.

Regulators and consumers should be cautious about relying on partial automation as a primary safety measure and instead prioritize developing and implementing proven crash avoidance technologies.
