Two recent studies by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found that drivers are likelier to engage in multitasking behavior, even following the system’s safety rules. The first study examined participants driving a Volvo S90 with adaptive cruise control (ACC) and Pilot Assist (PA). It found that drivers became increasingly likely to disengage from the road after using PA for a few weeks. This suggests drivers develop a false sense of security and become less attentive to their surroundings.
The second study investigated the behavior of drivers using Tesla Autopilot. It found that drivers learned to internalize the system’s safeguards and discovered ways to engage in non-driving activities. However, they also became more likely to glance off-road and received more attention reminders.
Both studies emphasize the importance of driver monitoring systems to ensure adequate attention to the road. The researchers argue that these systems should be designed to adapt to individual driver behaviors and provide appropriate warnings and interventions to prevent accidents.
