At the 2024 IDEAS Collide Showcase, Jill Tuggle, Executive Director of the AUTO BODY ASSOCIATION OF TEXAS, stressed the need for unity in the collision repair industry during her talk, “Un-divide and Conquer.” She traced the industry’s divisions back to the rise of Direct Repair Programs (DRPs) in the 1980s and the fear of collusion and antitrust accusations in the 1990s. These issues isolated shops and discouraged collaboration. By the 2000s, technological advances like ADAS spurred a shift, with shops seeking training and resources to adapt.
Tuggle highlighted the landmark John Eagle Case, which resulted in a $31.5 million verdict and brought safety to the forefront of collision repair. This pivotal moment inspired shops and associations like Auto Body Association of Texas to unite, prioritize training, and demand fair compensation. State associations grew stronger as shops embraced collaboration over competition, fostering a sense of community and shared goals.
Looking ahead, Jill Tuggle warned against new divisions caused by economic and technological pressures. She urged shops to engage with organizations like SCRS, attend events like Collision Day at the Capitol, and strengthen communication with peers. She emphasized that unity and collaboration are vital to the industry’s success.
