NHTSA grant program to update state crash reporting

A federal grant program is offering $350 million to help states update crash reporting systems, aiming to improve safety standards quickly. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is urging states to apply by May 1 to modernize data transfer for accurate and timely fatality statistics, including vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists.

This initiative is part of the government’s focus on improving crash data programs and integrating more safety technologies, such as automatic emergency braking (AEB), into vehicle standards to save lives. The collaboration between NHTSA and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) marks progress in this area, with 20 automakers meeting commitments to equip vehicles with AEB.
