Porsche Engineering has developed an AI-based software called PERL (Porsche Engineering Reinforcement Learning) to streamline the calibration process for modern vehicles. PERL reduces the need for bench tests and test drives, which are time-consuming and expensive.
PERL uses deep reinforcement learning to analyze data and suggest optimal calibration settings for various vehicle functions. This allows engineers to achieve better results in a shorter amount of time. PERL has already been successfully used in two customer projects and Porsche plans to expand its use in the future.
While PERL cannot eliminate the need for physical testing, it can significantly reduce the amount of time and resources required for calibration. This can lead to faster development cycles and more efficient use of engineering resources. PERL is also expected to help meet stricter emission standards.
