Texas Attorney General Sues General Motors Over Collection and Sale of Driving Data

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against General Motors, accusing the automaker of illegally collecting and selling the private driving data of over 1.5 million Texans to insurance companies and third parties without their consent. The lawsuit alleges that GM deceived consumers by claiming that enrolling in its products, like OnStar Smart Driver, was necessary for safety features, when in reality, it was a tactic to gain access to their data. This data was then used to create “Driving Scores” and sold to insurance companies. GM has denied any wrongdoing and is cooperating with the investigation.

This lawsuit is part of a larger initiative by the Texas Attorney General to protect consumer privacy and enforce data protection laws. The investigation into GM’s practices revealed a pattern of deceptive business practices that violated the privacy rights of millions of Texans. The Attorney General is seeking to hold GM accountable for its actions and prevent similar future violations.
