Toyota patented a system that lets car owners change the color of their vehicles using thermal energy. This would eliminate the need for dealerships to stock various paint colors and could potentially reduce unwanted inventory. The color change would happen in a special bay using heat and possibly light to activate a color-changing layer in the base paint (initially white according to the patent).
This technology offers a more convenient and potentially cheaper way to personalize a car compared to repainting or using vinyl wraps. Interestingly, this concept is similar to what BMW showcased in 2022 with their iX Flow that uses an electric signal to change the exterior color via a special film.
