The Volkswagen Group plans to use vehicle data to improve driver assistance systems and automated driving functions. Vehicle software updates will enhance driving comfort and traffic safety. High-quality data from real traffic situations is crucial for optimizing these systems. The initiative will start in Germany with Volkswagen and Audi models, and other brands will gradually join. Data collection could affect other vehicles and road users, but individual information about people is irrelevant.
Driving data is more relevant than tests with development vehicles or simulations. Specific data from defined scenarios will be transferred from the vehicle, including triggers like emergency braking and evasive maneuvers. Sensor, function, and image data are relevant for development work, such as camera images and environmental sensor detection results. Volkswagen Group uses its CARIAD cloud platform to connect to vehicles’ onboard computers and securely transfer data.
Models with E3 1.1 and E3 1.2 architectures are enabled for image data transfer. Customer consent is the fundamental prerequisite for data transfer and processing. Consent can be given in various ways and can be revoked at any time.
