In an ever-evolving automotive industry, staying ahead of the curve is vital for automotive technicians. With technological advancements surging forward, the skill set required is becoming more specialized. One way technicians are keeping up is through Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) certifications, but do these credentials actually increase market value for a technician?
To dig deeper into this question, we conducted a survey asking technicians whether or not they believe that OEM certifications enhance their market value. The responses were quite telling.
Survey Results for the question of whether or not OEM Certifications improve a technicians market value:
Here’s a detailed breakdown of the results and what they mean for the industry.
The Majority Says “Yes” – 66%
A significant 66% of technicians believe that OEM certifications do, in fact, increase their market value. This majority suggests that certifications can set you apart in a competitive field. With OEM certifications, technicians are better equipped to work on specific makes and models, enabling them to target a more niche market and often command higher pay rates.
The Skeptics – No 17%
On the flip side, 17% of respondents don’t think OEM certifications significantly affect their market value. They argue that real-world experience and a broad skill set can be just as valuable as specialized training. In an industry that is always changing, adaptability can sometimes outweigh specialization.
The Undecided – Don’t Know: 17%
Another 17% of respondents were unsure about the impact of OEM certifications. This could indicate a lack of sufficient data on career progression with and without these credentials or simply an uncertainty about the future of the industry and the role that certifications will play in it.
What Does This Mean for Auto Insurers and Automotive Repairers?
For auto insurers, a technician with OEM certifications may represent a lower risk profile, potentially leading to collaborations or partnerships with automotive repair companies. For companies in the automotive repair industry, having certified technicians could be a selling point, establishing credibility and attracting a specific customer base.
Concluding Thoughts
The survey results indicate a leaning towards the value of OEM certifications in enhancing the market value of automotive technicians. As cars become more specialized and technology-driven, these certifications may well become an industry standard rather than a resume booster. The key takeaway here is that continuous learning and adaptation are crucial in today’s fast-paced automotive world. OEM certifications are an excellent way for technicians to show they’re keeping up with these changes.
